Our Community

A Sanctuary of Orthodoxy in Glasgow

In 2013 the community was kindly provided with a crypt room underneath the Wellington Church, University Avenue, by the Church of Scotland. This space was completely renovated into a beautiful chapel by Bishop Augustine; it is dedicated to the Archangel Gabriel and to the loving memory of the episcopacy of Archbishop Gabriel, whose love, desire to share the Pearl of Great Price, and influence inspire our parish life.

We celebrate our liturgical services in English. We are dedicated to preaching the Gospel in its fullness, visiting the sick, providing spiritual support, and hosting seekers who wish to discover the Orthodox Church.

Archdiocese Affiliation

Our parish belongs to the Archdiocese of Orthodox Churches of Russian Tradition in Western Europe, under the omophorion of Archbishop Jean of Dubna, supporting outreach in Scotland.

Parish Priest · Bishop of Taldom

Bishop Augustine is a Glasgow native and the first Orthodox chaplain to the University of Glasgow. In 2014, he was invited by Metropolitan Kallistos to serve as the chaplain on the historic island of Iona. Consecrated to the episcopacy on 14th December 2025 in Paris holding the title of Bishop of Taldom, he is the primary confessor and priest of our community.

What to expect on your first visit

Practical etiquette and FAQs for seekers and visitors.

1. Sitting and Standing

The traditional posture for Orthodox worship is standing. However, please do not feel pressured. Benches and chairs are lined along the walls—feel free to sit whenever you need a rest. We stand during key moments (Gospel reading, Creed, Communion).

2. Dress Code

We generally dress modestly out of respect (clean, casual/formal clothes). Head coverings/scarves for women are entirely optional in our parish; do whatever makes you feel comfortable.

3. Holy Communion

Eucharist is restricted to prepared Orthodox Christians. However, everyone is warmly invited to receive a portion of the blessed bread (Antidoron) from the Priest at the end of the Liturgy.

4. Signing Yourself & Bowing

Orthodox Christians make the sign of the cross and bow frequently. Visitors are not expected to do so. You are welcome to simply stand, observe, and pray in the silence of your heart.

Children: Children are a vital part of our liturgy and worship with us. Restless children are welcome. If needed, feel free to step to the back or outside with your child for a moment.

Supporting the Community

We are grateful for the goodwill donations and support of our community and friends.

The Orthodox Parish of the Archangel Gabriel is funded entirely by its members and their efforts. The Community holds services almost daily, does charitable works, and pays for the upkeep of the church.

In our case, the Archangel Gabriel Parish does not receive any outside support from bodies such as the Archdiocese, so we as a community are solely responsible for all running expenses, charitable giving, and church upkeep. We normally provide these through the generosity of individual donors.

As our Parish is now growing, we are in a position to start looking for a bigger, permanent church building, but the cost of this is huge. We are working hard on fundraising activities to help support this move, but any donation is extremely helpful!

If you have the ability to support us on a more regular basis, the most effective way is to set up a monthly standing order. These regular offerings support all the important activities of the community as well as stabilising financial planning. If you already have a standing order in place: thank you!
